Other people are listing these as "NOS" implying they are factory NOS. If someone is trying to claim it's a factory NOS set up for $200 they are being dishonest.
You are purchasing a kit containing what is thought to be one 1980’s or 1990’s USA or European reproduction stamped steel 6” J-slot air cleaner cover of unknown origin. Someone was stamping covers like this in eastern Europe about 15-20 years ago but I have no idea if this was one of those and there was another company in Pennsylvania who stamped them for awhile. The quality is excellent on this and once it is painted or chromed you would be very hard pressed to find the differences between this and a known original. This has a very crisp Harley bar and shield logo and “MADE IN USA” below (you can literally see the stamp through the back side) that will stand out even after a coat of black paint or chrome.
We will have these in chrome at some point in late September and we will list those then.
Kit includes:
- 1402-35 backing plate
- 1405-37center spring
- 1404-35 copper mesh pack
- 1409-36 mounting bolts
- 1408-36 lock plate
- cleaning instruction tag and rivets.
Kit fits any two or four bolt inlet Linkert M-Series carburetor from 1930 forward. As far as any clearance issue with fuel tanks I have no idea. These were a factory option through 1948 but again could be used on any Linkert M-Series carb. The will not fit Linkert DC Series carbs. Popular consensus is the 6” air cleaner is “correct” up to 1940.
Used on the following:
- 1935-1936 RL
- 1935-1936 VL
- 1936-1940 EL & FL Knucklehead
- 1937-1940 UL flathead
- 1937-1940 W, WL, Servicar 45"
With the stepped center, four bolt mounting, and J-Slot mounting, this would be considered correct for 1939 and 1940 from what I have read, though the OEM cover carries a part number of 1401-35 and old parts catalogs say application is 1930 to 1948 twin.
This is in very good condition with no dents and the rust is only light surface rust, I do not see any pits.
I’ve seen this exact reproduction cover painted with an instruction tag sold as an original for hundreds more before. What sets this apart is that many of the reproductions would be flat all the way across the front surface rather than having the raised circular area or "step" like the originals. That is a distinct detail item on the originals anyone will notice and a detail which sets this apart from other repros.
Someone with less integrity would try and pawn this off as a stripped original needing restoration.
